Foxpro 9 runtime files

On my computer which of course has VFP9 I can enter myapp, press f1 and the help file appears, and works perfectly.

The InstallShield has been programmed to deploy all the files from the source folder into the appropriate destination folder. All this works. After the user installs myapp and is in the myapp folder, not the program, they can click on myapp. CHM and the help file appears. The merge modules and the runtimes install but not the foxhhelp9. I'm assuming these 2 files are needed for the user to be able to see the help file inside myapp or on f1. Perhaps there is an option in the Installshield that I'm not seeing.

Does myapp need the foxhhelp9. Respectfully, Calecrow My original question was about a new install program but I abandoned that and found a computer I could use the InstallSheild that works. So my question now is regarding the proper programming in Installshield. Yes I have been through the walkthrough but there is no mention of the help file.

While his 32 bit version works completely, and fixes all the bugs in version 9. I am trying to find the source for foxhhelp. Any idea how I can get a hold of the source files so he can recompile them? I don't go that route, aquiring software by decompilation is illegal. His VFP is illegal. Where does vfp 9 look for the runtime files. When he went to enter the exe it couldn't find the runtime library. I had him copy the runtime files into the application folder and it then ran fine.

This is clumsy because I have other programs that need to use the run time library. Thanks in advance. Thursday, September 29, AM. Hi CaleCrow, The exe file is marked internally to identify which run time use when invoked. So, if your installer merely puts the runtime files there, your EXE doesn't find them, yes.

I used to use the InstallShield but after a windows update not sure which one my InstallShield stopped working vfp9. I needed to find a new Windows Installer. CreateInstall fit the bill. I have an option to register the dll's that are required but I don't know where to register them. I see that including the files in the applications folder does work. Would it be able to read them. If so that seem like an easy solution. Thursday, September 29, PM. Friday, September 30, AM. My purpose for this inquiry is for my clients to be able to read the CHM file inside myapp.

Can I put them in a network directory all together, or do I really have to create an installation program? First off, you're missing one point. If you want to replace the exe on the server, it's not easy. You have to get all the users off the system first. Second, you can put the exe and the runtimes in a single folder.

Just use a launcher or loader to put in on the local PC. It is faster, reduces overall network traffic and means you can upload a new exe whenever you want to. The users just have to restart to get the latest version. Use an installer to put the launcher icon on the desktops, since it changes so infrequently compared to your application. You can also have a timer in your application to force users off in the relatively rarer circumstance when you must ensure everyone is using the very latest version.

The application will be used infrequently. It's just for reports for our techs who generally do them once a month or quarterly. Anyway, I let my 18 users know that an application is going to be updated, and I do it at night by a program I wrote to do this.

I've been doing this for the last 10 years with my FoxPro 2. If some app doesn't get updated because a user didn't close it, I slap them aside the head. They learn soon enough. They don't even like strange Icons on the desktop. I do that, too. We have a NAL menu that runs networked applications.

That's the worst thing that can happen to us, especially to a developer like me. I have to re-install everything and it takes a week to get everything back the way it was I do a lot of development in different languages.

I've had it done twice, and some others in my department have had it done, it's hell to everyone. So, as long as I can put the runtime files in the same directory, and I really don't need an install program, I'll give it a try, just like the old days. Thanks for your help. This probably won't be of any help to you, but just to add another factor to the mix: Installing the EXE and runtime files on a local drive will give a big boost to performance. The application will load faster, and it will generally be zippier in execution.

But I understand your points about re-imaging the PC, etc. You could always have a loader that runs from the network drive and copies the app locally at run time if it is newer than the existing and copies the runtime support too. Thus appearing not to have been installed, but running locally Good point, but I'll have to check on performance and compare the two methods.

My other FoxPro 8 and 9 applications were installed on the local drive, and are zippy enough for my users, but they are using FoxPro tables, not SQL Server. The Loader sounds interesting to try as well. I'll start with the easiest, and go toward the more time consuming to set up. Thanks, again. Anand Yadav IT Champs.
